I am lost.

I decided to stop procrastinating, and try installing Mandrake 10.1. I've had it for a while, a freind gave it to me with several Linux programs. My hatred of Windows was the main factor, here. So, now I have it installed, but don't know anything about it. How do you start a cd? How do you troubleshoot your internet connectivity? WTF? It's installed on a slave hard drive for now, but I'd like to be free from MS someday. Are there any sites that aren't in geekinese?

    Hi Donald,

I'm still a linux noob too, but I have a bit of a technical background. It's taken me a while to re-orient myself in linux, but I'm getting there.

To get to know linux you will have to do a fair bit of reading. A good source of basic info is TUX magazine ( www.tuxmagazine.com/ ) which is specifically for new linux users, so it's minimal "geekinese." It gives some good general info, and covers lots of programs to help you get comfortable and productive.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you. I know windows inside out, and am familiar with Mac OS, so it's been somewhat humbling trippingover yself with linux. Thank you, I'll check it out.

geekinese is funny. but really nomenclature is everywhere right? to really admin your box you need to know some geekinese.
2 things that help. man pages are your friend, as in "man ifconfig" or "man iproute" google is your friend, as in "linux ethernet configuration" or "mandrake ethernet configuration"

    think about ubuntu ;)

Thanx guys. great links. It just occured to me how "computer lazy" I've become. I guess Windows is so mainstream because it brings everything to you, and is designed for new users. Just a thought.

        it's getting easier!
really it is. I haven't really used another distro other than Debian or Ubuntu for the last year but if Ubuntu is any indication things will be way easier than Windows.
Not everything is pie in the sky in Windows land either. MS is still a ways off from full "zero conf".
Windows is so mainstream because of killer marketing and shitty morals. It's not any easier, just what most people are used to.
Give it time and you will wonder wtf you used Windows for in the first place.

        cheers!

So, is Ubuntu just a different version of Linux?

Different distribution of the same kernel and the GNU tool chain. Add packages and unique implimentaions of and you have a distribution.
Ubuntu seems to have it right at the moment. I have used mdk before. I am just fond of the way Debian or Apt based distros manage packages.
Oh, and the outfit I work for is a Debian/Ubuntu shop so I use what we push :)
