I've encountered my first split .rar with linux and was wondering what people user other than the linux version of winrar. Does anyone have any preferred tools? CLI or gui, doesn't matter.

Re: segmented rar files
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 2:51 AMI've not used the Linux version of Winrar. Is it crippleware? Does it not handle split rar files?

Re: segmented rar files
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 6:31 AMI ended up not going with winrar's app. Had a brief moment of conciousness and ran a repo search for rar (running FC6) which came up with a package simply called "rar".
I'm working on a somewhat tight schedule and haven't enabled remote entry for my box yet, so I have yet to see if this will do the trick.
I usually wouldn't bother with rar files either, but this torrent site I joined recently seems to thrive on them.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. -

Thu, February 1, 2007 - 9:30 AMThanks for the info. I've never "done" a rar before, so I was as curious about your question as I was about "why rar?" -

Re: segmented rar files
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 8:05 AMrar format is supposed to be an easy way to save multipart files with the benefit of good error recovery.

Re: segmented rar files
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 9:37 AMI just did a quick second look (I noticed 'rar' last night in Debian Stable) and it seems that 'rar' is shareware (40-day) from the same guy that created WinRar.
Ok, folks...I'm a geek and I am just not grokking this 'rar' thing. Why rar? Can someone school me on this? :-) -

Re: segmented rar files
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 11:40 AMI'm not privy, either.
The majority of users in this community seem to be running Windows and, from my not-exactly-exhaustive experience, winrar seemed to be one of the better archival apps available on Win. I'm not sure why they're segmenting the archives though. Perhaps they're trying to invoke some kind of transfer rate increase with smaller files, though I don't think it would make a difference with bittorrent.

Re: segmented rar files
Thu, February 1, 2007 - 5:59 AMI use XFCE but have Gnome installed for many of the apps. Laziness dictates just using plain old FileRoller. I don't deal w/ .rar files much, a few for Neverwinter Nights modules but thats it. I don't know if FileRoller has the functionality you need. It is though stock Gnome, under Nautilius you should be able to right click .rars and get options for operations. -

Re: segmented rar files
Fri, February 2, 2007 - 7:59 AMI totally lied. It's "Archive Manager" under Thunar/XFCE. My bad. I think in Gnome it is called File Roller though.
