I'm new to Linux, but not having much success. I have two laptops, one of which I dedicated 100% to Linux a few months ago. I burnt a Puppy Linux start-up disk, wiped my hard-drive and now boot from the disk. I tried to configure the modem so I could connect to the internet on my wireless connection but am not having much luck. I read somewhere that I might have a Win-specific modem which means I would have to buy a new modem and install it. I'm not experienced at taking computers apart and putting them back together, but I'm not afraid to if I have a little instruction and know what to watch out for.
The laptop is an Acer TravelMate 4010. I ran the "Network Wizard" and it does this test thing where it "found 2 active network interfaces" (eth0 and eth1) and told me the loaded network driver modules were:
3c59x b44 ipw2200
I tested eth0 and it wasn't working so I went to eth1 which is a wireless interface. This being what I wanted I set the wireless parameters (gave it a name and the ESSID, which is unencrypted). Tested it to see if it was connected to an "alive" network to no success. At this point I tried every button option I was given and put in the required information where needed, which I copied from my other laptop which is running Windows XP. So the same IP address (I don't know if that works or if it has to have it's own individual IP and if it does how to get it one?) in the "Static IP" menu, but still no connect.
Also, I'm interested what can I do with Linux? I'm not very savvy or imaginative I suppose. All I usually do on the computer is surf the net, write various documents from letters to fiction and play games. I read "In the Beginning Was The Command Line" by Neal Stephenson and later that week got my version of Puppy Linux.
I'm wondering what the difference is between all these versions of Linux. I get the idea that it has to do with what you are using the computer for and what features you desire, but truth is I'm not sure what features there are since as I said before my applications are fairly limited.
